HENRIQUE GARCIA PEREIRA
Curriculum Vitae (December 2024) Henrique José de Figueiredo Garcia Pereira was born in 1945 in Lisbon. In 1969 he graduated in Chemical Engineering and in 1971 in Mining Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico. In 1978 he obtained a postgraduate degree at the École des Mines de Paris in “Geostatistique des Phénomènes non-stationnaires”, under Professor Georges Matheron. In 1981 he earned his PhD in Mining Engineering at IST, under the supervision of Professor José Quintino Rogado, with the dissertation “Structural analysis and its effects on the economic evaluation of mining projects”. In 1990 he obtained his Habilitation at IST with the work “Analysis of Geological-Mining Data. Applications and Methodological Study”. Since 1994 he has been Full Professor at IST, responsible for the area of NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT of the Geological and Mining Engineering course (until 2015). In 1997-1998 he was Visiting Professor at Imperial College, responsible for the syllabus, lecturing and examination of the course “ORE RESERVE ESTIMATION”, third year of the Mining Engineering Course. Since 1990 he has been the director of the GEO-SISTEMAS journal, published by Edições Colibri, being responsible for the editorials, coordination of three issues and article review. In June 1998 he gave a lecture at the Territory Pavilion of EXPO’98 “The place of Geo-resources in the space of knowledge”.
In January 2001 he was invited to present the book "RECOMBINATORY ART" at a conference at the Republic and Resistance Museum. In December 2001 he was invited by SLOW FOOD to go to Évora to present “RECOMBINATORY ART IN THE GASTRONOMIC-LITERARY SLOWNESS” (To view the presentation click here). In 2002 he published the book “APOLOGY OF HYPERTEXT IN THE DRIFT OF TEXT” at DIFEL publishing house (APE 1999 Revelation Prize in the category “Literary Essay”). In February 2003 he went to Porto to give a lecture on “CYBERLITERATURE IN DEBATE”. In July 2003 a review by GONÇALO M. TAVARES of the book “Apology of Hypertext in the Drift of Text” was published. In March 2004 his book “THE STUFF DREAMS ARE MADE OF” was released by Edições Teorema. On May 12 he was invited to present “PSYCHOGEOGRAPHIC ITINERARY THROUGH THE AVENIDAS NOVAS” in a conference at the Republic and Resistance Museum.
On July 15, 2004, at Ler Devagar, with Gonçalo M. Tavares, he presented the performance “INTERWOVEN READINGS”. In September 2004 he published, co-authored with Leonel Moura, the text “SYMBIOTIC ART AS A NEW TYPE OF GAME RECOMBINING ART, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY”, available at www.interact.com.pt. On November 4, 2004, he presented Enrique Vila-Matas’ book “MONTANO’S MALADY” at Casa Fernando Pessoa. On November 11, 2004, a review of the “PAINTER ROBOTS” was published in Expresso. In January 2005 he gave a lecture at Serralves on the “PAINTER ROBOTS”. In March 2005 he organized, with Leonel Moura, the exhibition “BIOART” at António Prates Gallery. In June 2005 he was invited to give the Opening Lecture of the “INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ART AND COMMUNICATION”, held at CCB and organized by the Center for Studies in Communication and Languages of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In July 2005 he published an article in “LE MONDE DIPLOMATIQUE”. In September 2005 he published an article in “EXPRESSO”. In September 2005 he gave an online interview for the newsletter “DE FRENTE”, available at http://www.algebrica.pt/. In October 2005 he gave the lecture “IN PRAISE OF THE ARTIFICIAL”, as invited speaker at the 2nd Science Forum, held in Porto. ![]() In May 2007 he participated in the IST Innovation Seminars with a lecture on “SCIENCE AND ART”. On October 2, 2007, he gave the lecture “MEN AND ROBOTS - Symbiotic Art” at the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library in Tavira. In December 2007 he gave an interview for "DN". In September 2009 he was consultant for the exhibition held at Cordoaria Nacional on “ART and SCIENCE”. His text “Art as a new kind of natural philosophy: blasting boundaries” was included in the catalogue “INSIDE ART AND SCIENCE”, LxXL, Lisbon 2009, p. 50-55, and the summary of his contribution can be found on YouTube. In 2008 and 2009 his three-volume book “FRAGMENTS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN (A multidimensional analysis)” was released. In 2011 his book “BRASILIANA TANGENCIAL (Contessays of the Atlantic)” was published by IST Press. In 2015 he published the e-book “CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSIS AS A MODELLING TOOL”, by IST Press. From 2015 to 2017 he obtained, through an international competition, a ‘special visiting researcher’ grant at UFC (Federal University of Ceará). During that period, he coordinated R&D in the Department of Geology at UFC, supervised two PhDs, taught an intensive course in data analysis under a specific model, where in the afternoons students worked on their own data using an open-source program developed at CERENA (e-book), and delivered the following lectures within the department’s activities: October 2015 November 2016 November 2017 In November 2018 he participated in Episode 31 of the TVI program 'Ephemera - Objects touched by History' In January 2019 he collaborated in the Exhibition on the Student Movement at IST [1967-1974] In May 2019 he published the book "FESTIVE LEFT AT TÉCNICO IN THE 60s" In June 2019 he contributed with his testimony as reader and friend of Ler Devagar bookstore, in the commemorative edition for the 20th anniversary of its opening. In April 2020 he published online, in "Celebrating April", the text "In times of confinement, (micro-historical) homage to a Friend long confined". In November 2021 he gave the lecture "Science and Art Combined in an Immanent Attitude" at Alcântara Library, part of the conference series 'Horizons of Science'. In December 2022 he issued an admissibility opinion for the Habilitation exam candidate at FEUP, Dr. Patrícia Cristina e Silva Figueira Gouveia. On February 26, 2024, he gave a lecture at Alcântara Library on "Micro-history of the 60s through the voice of a leftist off the mainstream". On April 26, 2024, he went to Escola Básica e Secundária Fernão do Pó, in Bombarral, to give a class to 12th grade students on "The student movement and April 25". In October 2024 he published the book "Viral Autofictions" with the footnotes in "Vagabond Marginalia", presented in Óbidos and at the Casa do Comum. |
